No, I am not praising Hitler. I am thinking of the faith, trust and hope that so many Christians have placed in Donald Trump. Trump, they hope and pray, will heal a sick America and make her great again.
Most of my life, I thought that Heil Hitler meant something like Praise Hitler or Viva Hitler. I was wrong. Heil means heal. If you plug “Heil Gott” into Google Translate, it will come back in English as God of Healing or Healing God.
Germany had been greatly wounded by World War One. They were required, not only to rebuild their own nation but to repay the Allies for the expenses incurred in fighting them. The debt was overwhelming and impossible to pay. The result was poverty and hunger. Germans were in pain. Their sense of pride in their own nation and race had been wounded; they had been humiliated in front of the whole world. Germany needed a savior. Germany need a healer… someone who would, “Make Germany Great Again.” Hitler was that man.
When you look at the old movies and films and see hundreds of thousands of Germans, lifting their arms in that strange Nazi salute, and shouting “Heil Hitler”, they are not praising him; they are expressing a vain but glorious hope… They stood for hours and shouted, “Heal Hitler!” It was an expression of their sincere belief that Hitler was the man who would heal Germany and make her great again.
As I listen to so many Christians expressing the vain but glorious hope that Trump will heal America and make her great again, I cannot help but think of all the wounded, hurting Germans, who stood up, in pride and arrogance, shouting “Heal Hitler”!
I Bet that most of you did not know that…
David…
